I know how hard it is for you at times
When you see a little one dash about
And perform a simple task that everyone
Else takes for granted.
I know how hard it is for you at times
When a little one smaller than Stacie
Looks puzzled and asks,
“Why can’t she talk?”
I know how hard it is for you
When you can’t play pretend with her
Or know that she is joyfully anticipating
Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny.
But I also know that you have a keen awareness
Of how important these little things are,
And you understand that they are not
Little things after all.
When you can see what everyone else
Takes for granted,
You have grown very tall.
When you can overcome your sadness and
Love her as she is
You have grown very tender.
You are growing up to be very sensitive to just
How important the little things in life are,
And you are much better people for this,
Far richer than those who feel sorry for you.
I know that it is not easy
I know it tugs at your heart
And I love you for being as you are.
